In the Basso Tavoliere just to the North of the Ofanto, in the locality of Terra di Corte, at about 2 Km from the village of San Ferdinando di Puglia numerous hypogei were discovered around an area of about 5,000 sq m. All the hypogei can be dated to the late stages of the Bronze age. They were used for rituals and operated as true temples. These hypogei are dug under the limestone crust that acts as the structure bearing the vault. The hypogei that have been explored so far consist of a main room (camera) that may be preceded by a vestibule. The access, which is excavated from the limestone crust, is made up of an open-sky dromos with an encased and very steep ramp and an underground corridor that is low and narrow (stomion).
