The Madonna degli Angeli church is the only Greek church in Barletta, for this reason it is commonly called the Greek church. Over the last few centuries Barletta has been given hospitality to many Greek communities which have deeply influenced the Barletta culture as for traditions as well as for buildings, the Greek church is an example.
According to the Greek tradition the Greek church or Santa Maria degli angeli church, recently restored, boasts many frescos or wooden artifacts such as the imposing wooden and gold-plated altar representing Christian characters. This altar was used for celebrations instead the innermost part was used for confessions symbolizing a transposition or a boundary between earthly life and the saints. Consequently praying or confessing inside the altar, meant to be closest to God.
