The Teutonic Knights that also built the convent dedicated it to their patron, Saint Leonardo. It is thought that this church is one of the oldest in the city (13th century). For a brief period it belonged to the Benedictine, but after the destruction of the city after the siege of 1350, it was reconstructed by the Agostiniani Scalzi (Barefoot Augustinian) -on a commission by the Duke of Balzo- who dedicated it to Saint Augustine.

The portals are truly remarkable. The main one overlooks the square and dates back to approximately the 13th century. The lateral portal has the fleur de lis escutcheon of the d’Anjou, and on the sides, the crest of the city of Andria with a rampant lion and Bishop Florio with a calf carrying a tree. The eagles of the Teutonic Knights are also represented here.
