The opening of the “Giuseppe De Nittis” Picture Gallery, in the splendid site of the “della Marra” Palace, marks an historic date for the city of Barletta that boasts, since 1914, the richest and the most famous collection of the works of the famous painter who represented one of the elevated moments in the ‘800 artistic frame in Europe. De Nittis was born in Barletta in 1846, educated in Naples, he conquered fame and success in Paris and London and died, only 38, in Saint-Germain-en-Lave. The Picture Gallery which preserves his works, his wife Léontine Gruvelle’s gift to his native town, it is not only a museum, but also the coming back home of the great artist who renews, from Apulia, the dialogue with the XIX century art and culture’s characters. The museum itinerary, set for great themes, starts from the Neapolitan experience, with its real landscapes, pauses on the Vesuvian slopes, stretches along the charm of the modern and all changing metropolis, Paris and London, opens up to the suggestions of the big world, unveils the inner lyricism for Léontine and the women dear to the painter from Barletta. From the Picture Gallery, De Nittis European it is re-suggested to the art and culture world, also a programme of exhibitions dedicated to the artists that, like him, animated Paris in the second half of the ‘800.
