The grotto of Santa Croce in Bisceglie is 1.30 m long and is 1.20 m above sea level. It was discovered in 1934 by the Bisceglie scholar Francesco Saverio Majellaro, who was looking for the first sites of worship of the Martyrs, protectors of the city. From a paleontology point of view this find is of considerable importance. in 1955 a portion of a femur was recovered that belonged to a Neanderthal adult of about 80,000 years ago, the only example in Italy. Moreover, in the course of further digs, a complete mat made of vegetable fibres was recovered. A truly extraordinary find because it is the oldest woven one in Italy.
