The Puglia Imperiale area makes some of the finest olive oils produced anywhere in Italy – fragrant and intensely-flavoured, mainly pressed from the most widespread and prized variety, the “Coratina” olive. Here the expanses of olive groves, a symbol of Apulia around the world, stretch from one horizon to the other. The olive oil sector is a vital part of the local economy, and includes growers, processors, bottlers and distributors, both at a national and international level. The Puglia Imperiale area has two main centres of production : “Dop Terra di Bari” (around Castel del Monte), and “Dop Dauno” (in the Lower Tavoliere plain). The cities of Castel del Monte and the Lower Tavoliere are full of olive presses, both ancient and modern. Large and small farms have often come together to form huge consortia (such as la Strada dell’olio extravergine Castel del Monte and la Strada dell’olio extravergine a DOP Dauno), in order to promote the product, taking great care to spread the culture of olive oil as a highly delicious and nutritional product.
